April 8

Hi Team 1Z,

Wow, it was so great to get a full five day week in class. We had so much learning this week! Grade 1s will continue to take 5 books home each week to practice/show off their reading skills. We’ve been working really hard on knowing what to do when there’s a tricky word in a book. Students have learned many strategies (look at the picture, ask themselves “What makes sense?”, skip the word and go back to it, look for a small word in a big word, the Magic E, when two vowels go walking, etc) and need lots of practice using these strategies now. Reading books at home to family members is a great way to get some of that important practice in.

All Kindergarten students have been participating in Guided Reading lessons with a group at their reading level. They are working to increase their ability to use strategies to solve words in the context of their books. They are also gaining lots of confidence and pride in their reading ability.

Today, we were lucky enough to have 3 small catepillars join our class. The class voted on their names and they are Fluffy, Mailey and Buzzbee. They will stay in our class until they form their chrysalis and then will move to a special area in the library to hatch into butterflies.

We also got to check in on the pumpkin plant that is growing from a decomposed pumpkin in the library today as well.

The class as a whole, but especially the Grade 1s have been working on using special tools to grow their brains when learning new skills. In Math they are using counters, number lines, 100s charts and 10s frames to become stronger at subtracting. In Writing they are using word lists, collaboration and spelling strategies to write. Learning to use special tools will help with all learning.

The Grade 1s will begin the Be Safe program next week with Ms. Bishop. Thank you all for returning those permission forms many weeks ago.
