Hi 1Z families!

What a beautiful, sunny five day week we’ve had together in class. This week we got to read with our 5A Book Buddies outside again, and we got to welcome another two new students to our classroom.

The butterflies in the library have been set free and we hope they will continue to populate the West Kent neighbourhood. The chicks should be hatching soon, and we are excited for that to happen.

We planted our classroom garden this week. We started with lettuce and radish micro greens. We are hopeful to see sprouts when we are back next week, but so far we just have three trays of dirt. I’m hoping my less-than-green thumb won’t ruin this for the class!

Kindergarten added the words to, of, and an to our sight word list this week. Students have been practicing reading and writing all the sight words. At home you can encourage your child to find the sight words in texts naturally found around the home in order to support their learning. Kindergarten students also joined our Gr. 1 students in our procedural writing this week. We learned how to break every day tasks into steps and to write them in order. We worked together to write the steps we used when planting our class garden, then students indivually chose topics and wrote independently How To procedutal texts.

We also got to listen to a brand new book by PEI author and teacher, Lisa Carmody-Doiron. After we read her new book, we wrote letters to share our opinions about the book. Those letters will be delivered to her this weekend!

The highlight of the week was the trip we took to Victoria Park with KB & KC. Students saw ducks, squirrels, chipmunks and salamanders. We looked at frog eggs and lily pads in the pond. We got to walk through the woods (and excitedly past some student’s houses) and then play on the playground. When we got back to the school, everyone enjoyed a popscicle to cool down. We plan to go again next week, but we are waiting for a clearer forecast before we confirm the day. I will post when we know.

The Home & School will be selling hanging baskets from VanKampens for $40 each between May 2 – 25th. An order form went home with students on Monday. Orders can be placed on the form or online.
