Hello again KA/1A team,
We had a great week of laughing and learning here at school! Our Book Buddies from 5V visited us again, and we did some Autumn Art and Science.
This week in Fundations we continued to review the 7 letters that we’ve already learned, and added C & O to our repertoire. We have also started to talk about the difference between vowels and consonants and we have been doing vowel extensions together daily as well.
In Math we have really started to focus on different ways to represent numbers in order to strengthen our understandings of how to manipulate numbers. We continue to practice creating, finding, and extending patterns in a variety of ways as well.
We had an exciting start to our Writer’s Workshop this week. Our main goal in our first few Writer’s Workshop sessions is to build excitement and confidence in putting our ideas on paper and seeing ourselves as writers. I would say that we have been successful in this so far and students have been disappointed when writing time is up!
The Fall Fair is coming up on October 29, and we are collecting items for the raffle baskets. The theme for the KA/1A, KB, and KC basket is Candy! These three classes will put all the candy themed donations into a basket that will be raffled off as part of the Fall Fair. Other grade levels are doing different baskets as well. If you’re able, please send any candy themed donations to school between October 13-29th. Tickets will be sold on all baskets between October 17-29th, and the winners will be drawn at the end of the Fall Fair.
We are excited to celebrate Halloween at West Kent this year. On Friday, October 28 students are invited to wear orange and black and we will be participating in Spooktacular. Students are also invited to wear costumes to school on Monday, October 31. We ask that masks, weapons or anything with blood not be included in the costume that comes to school. As well, any accessories to costumes that can easily be lost or forgotten should be left at home to avoid Trick or Treating disapointments.
Student Nurses from UPEI started their observations in class this week. The two nurses that have been assigned to our class are Dee and Liam. We look forward to seeing them again next week and to the fun activities they will be planning for us in November.
If you are ordering Hot Lunches (daily milk, weekly ice cream, monthly pizza) or from the Provincial School Lunch Program https://www.peischoolfood.ca/ please make sure that your child is registered under the KA/1A class code. There have been some changes to our class composition since the start of the year, and we have been having some difficulties getting our lunches delivered to our classroom. If everyone could take a minute to confirm that the correct class code is being used, it would help make lunch run more smoothly. Thanks!
Please make sure to check/send Homework Bags every day. These are important communication tools between home and school. Finished work, notes from the office, Home & School information and other items are sent home in these bags and many can be time sensitive. In order to build independence and a sense of responsibility, students are taught that it is part of their ‘homework’ to make sure they give whatever is in their bag to their grownups at home each day after school. Your support in reminding them to empty their bags daily and then pack it in their backpack again will help them grow and develop.
We have an exciting week next week in our class. We have the team from STEAM PEI coming to do an interactive math based presentation with Magnaformers. It is Library Week and we will welcome a special guest to the class to read a story to the students. We will have picture retakes, our student nurses will come back for another visit, and we will have Spooktacular (Halloween themed activities around the school). A very exciting time!
