Hi KA families,
We had another great week learning together in KA. In FunDations we learned Nn and Mn. On Monday we will add two more letters to our repertoire. We also had our very first Book Buddies experience with the 3/4V class. We will read with our reading role models every Day 4, and the class is already looking forward to the next time and excitedly spotting their buddies around the school. In Numeracy we have been slowly adding new ways to count to 5 to our daily Math Meeting. Students are currently practicing tally marks, 10s frames, numerals, showing with fingers, drawing a certain number of objects and representing using dice.
This week we also learned more about Terry Fox and had our Terry Fox Run on Friday. Thank you all for sending in money that will go directly to the Terry Fox Foundation. We also started learning about Orange Shirt Day /National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. We read Stolen Words and had a discussion about making Canada the best country that we can together.
We also completed our ‘Bandaid’ activity this week to help explain fairness. Each student took a turn and was given a pretend illness/injury/situation. It might have been a toothache, a haircut, a new teddy or a stubbed toe. The first student had a cut on their arm, so was given a bandaid on their arm. Every other student was also given a bandaid on the same spot on their arm. Students quickly started to question my judgment and quickly realized that everyone getting the same treatment did not make sense. At the end, we found that fairness does not always mean that everyone gets the same thing. It does mean that everyone gets what they need. We took a picture of everyone’s arm with their bandaids and have it hanging in our classroom as reminder of that lesson.
Thank you for coming out to Meet the Staff Thursday evening. I really enjoyed the chance to chat to everyone, even if I did have to rush things at the end.
